TP Pumpkin Gourd Decoration

A toilet paper roll challenge, some free Fushion Mineral Paint in Tuscan Orange, some textured paper towels, and a desire to have a little fun. I created a little decoration to set on the foyer table, and did the whole thing while on bed rest.

Some of the materials used.
I got up twice to gather materials. I used 5 toilet paper rolls, 1 empty spool from a serger sewing machine, about an ounce of FUSHION Mineral Paint in Tuscan Orange (any orange paint would probably work), a squirt of Apple Barrel acrylic paint in Territorial Beige, a bottle of Tacky Glue I tried, but didn't use, a twist of brown packing paper, an empty small chicken pot pie pan, 2 silk leaf trimmings, a toile bow from a birthday present, a 1" sponge paintbrush, a fat rubber band, scissors, 5 half sheets of paper towels with a vertical tree bark pattern, and a used styrofoam plate for an easel. I used no glue, just paint. Obviously, I used only things I already had.

Lots of texture on paper towel.
I wrapped each toilet paper roll in half a sheet of paper towel from my bathroom. I wish I knew what brand, but it's been a while since I put the towels in there. I tucked enough of the towel in the ends of the tp rolls to hold them in place. I did try Tacky Glue but it was so thick that I must have left a lid open sometime. So I put some paint on the roll to hold the paper towel, then lightly brushed the orange paint over the towel. I let each coat dry before I added more paint, and the paper towel held up to the painting, eventually soaking up enough paint to be glued on.

A serger sewing machine spool.
I painted the spool, given to me in a bag of recyclables by Maxine Norris. I wanted a center to stabilize the tp rolls and this fit. I put a wide rubber band around the center of the rolls. By fortunate accident, when the spool and rolls held by the rubber band were completely dry, I realized the band could removed because the shape was set, but I left it on.
Then I cut a center circle out of the little pot pie pan so it would fit over the spool, and cut little slices out of the edge of the pan to help it spread out like a gourd cap. I painted the pan brown, and did some drybrushing on the sides of the pumpkins to enhance the texture.

From this stage . . .
With the gourd cap in place, I added two snippets of silk leaves from some odd flowers in my stash, and a twist of brown paper for a stem. The last step was to add a pretty toile bow I found in the gift bag holder.

. . . to this pumpkin decoration.
I'm sorry about the weird backgrounds in my photos. It's hard to stage photos from my pillow. I can't wait to see all the other toilet paper roll entries. Best wishes 😇

Thank you, Sunny C. I'm doing much better after surgery. How are you preparing for Irma, and the two storms developing in the Atlantic?

My pumpkin looks more like an acorn, but I want to do more. Where DID I put that old dryer hose? Lol.
