Use the end of a large salvaged wire spool or cut out a large circle from plywood. Pinterest has some god ideas on making large clocks.
Use pallet boards. This stuff is awesome. Some I have seen using a light stain and some using nothing. Pallet boards make some really nice table tops too. Just glue them to a piece of plywood and stand back to see your creation!!
