Fresh pine will leak some sap. It’s best to cut it and let it dry before crafting.
Just gently shake them to remove loose needles and dirt. You can use a blow dryer too. The cut may leak some sap but it should harden fast. Don't let them dry too long or the needles will start to fall off.
You want to make sure there are no bugs in the pine. If you have the time, you can rinse them off with a hose and let then dry completely, like in a garage before using them.
I would rinse them with water and allow them time to dry.
Hi Wanda, here's some info if you are wanting to preserve the cuttings. Otherwise, just rinse them off well and let air dry or you could add a bit of white vinegar to the water asa well, especially if you're using the cuttings inside your home rather than outside.

I always rinse my pine needles. Pine Cones I rinse in bleach water then put in the oven at around 250 and let them dry out and they open up beautifully

Hi Wanda, I just run mine under water and then use them. It really depends on the time of year though. It I am cutting them down for Christmas (I live in Canada) I don't clean them since nothing can live on them once it is cold anyway. I also make sure to only collect and cut from up on a bush or tree (well above the dog level LOL )
Hi! I shake them before I bring them inside. This time of year I rarely find anything on them. You can put them in a bag overnight if you're worried about bugs. Just like with fresh cut Christmas trees, there is rarely a problem! Stay safe!
I wipe down with denatured alcohol first.
I don't but then again, it's cold where I live now so there wouldn't be any bugs.
I soak them overnight in the sink. I think the water helps them last longer!
