How to clean and paint a used concrete bird bath?

Use a vinegar/water solution to clean it. If it's really bad, just vinegar. Rinse well and let it dry. Prime the concrete bird bath using 2 coats and then paint with an oil-based outdoor paint. Good luck with your project!

Clean with concrete etching & cleaner. Then it will be ready to paint but you might consider staining instead.

I agree that concrete stain or dye would be better because it soaks into the pores and won’t peel or chip.

That’s a good question, I’m not sure of paints are safe for bird drinking purposes I wonder if calling and paint manufacturer might be suggested.

I'd use an outdoor safe spray paint w a spray sealant

Hi Vicki: Clorox makes a product called Clorox Outdoors. It is VERY strong Clorox. I have used it on concrete statues with great results. Wear gloves and a mask. Spray on the birdbath. Rinse Well and let dry completely in the sun. After it dries it is not toxic. I have one in a pond in my backyard. If you want to paint or stain it, you could do that with concrete stain, but once it is nice and clean there is no reason to do that.

You don't want to use any kind of paint that will hurt the birds. Check the ingredients and use a natural paint. I just power washed mine and it looks like new.

We've used a power washer to clean ours. We never use chemical since the birds drink from the bath. I would be wary of paint as well. Most paints are not food safe for humans, not sure about birds.
