I know one method is to use a sand blaster. you paint on the negative of your image for the area not being removed and blast the unprotected glass to frost it. then remost the paint
Any craft store has etching cream with fairly clear instructions, hint: well ventilated space...no direct fan as it will dry object too rapidly, be sure to apply a thick coating for best results.
Make a stencil for your design, then use etching cream.
You can also use a Dremel drill with a special end for etching glass.

Besides etching cream, you can buy a spray paint that gives the illusion of etching.
There is a way to make etching cream at home, but it's only recommended if you know a fair amount about chemicals, so you're probly best to buy it at any craft store
