My mom and I made ice candles when I was younger. All you need is a cleaned out waxed milk or juice carton that you can open fully at the top, a wick tall enough to reach the top of the carton, something to attach the wick to, like a skewer or dowel to keep it centered (keep the skewer or dowel across the top of the carton). Melt you wax (we used a double boiler). We used cracked or crushed ice. You need enough to fill the carton, firmly packed around the wick. Now comes the magic! Slowly pour your melted wax evenly over the ice. You can add glitter, etc. if you want. The ice will be crackling and melting from the heat of the wax. You want to pour a good amount of wax in. Once it settles, pou the water out from the melted ice. The wax should cool quickly. Mom used to let the drained container sit in the refrigerator for a couple hours. Then, you cut down the corners of the carton, exposing the intricate designs created by the ice and wax. One of my tricks was to put a red or pink taper candle in the center, packing it in the center with the ice, and then droppings small items, like beads as the layers form, with the wax. I think ice candles are gorgeous, but they are just one magic way to make a candle. Protect the surface you work on from the water and wax. Have cold water handy in case you drip wax on you, because it's very hot, and the cold water will solidify and cool it. We occasionally had failures with our waxy designs, but, we would just dry the wax, melt it and do a new pour. Good luck and stay safe!
