Hi Donns First line the top of you cabinets with wax paper. When they get dirty or greasy you can just remover the paper and no hard scrubbing. I have put fake plants up there, but they get too greasy. What I have found best is to put out my large dishes or jars. At Christmas I put out my Christmas plates.
Good idea lining the top of the cabinets with wax paper.
I put wire pieces up there. Wire basets in the shape of different animals after spray painting them my accent color (burnt orange). With a white wall they really stand out.
Baskets, pottery, Vintage pieces like wooden boxes or old scales are a few ideas.
You might consider having a theme going on...cows, farm, hens, teapots...
I used to line that area with news paper, wax paper works too.
Keep in mind that any decor items that you put up on top of the upper cabinets will be magnets for dust, spider webs, and grease to cling to.
Most folks find it physically not that easy to climb up there to keep dusting and vacuuming the area.
For lower maintenance overall, I would suggest either filling the space in with hinged doors for enclosed hidden storage, or if you do not require additional storage, then just panel the space over completely.
The flat surface can then be painted, wallpapered, stencilled, or enhanced with crown moulding.
Pots, baskets, boxes, and even pictures can add to the decor of your kitchen when placed between the cabinets and ceiling. Lining the area with newspaper or wax paper is a good idea. You can change the decor once in a while for variety. Perhaps mark on your planning calendar a few months out to dust or clean the items there.
Here's a cool tip for keeping the area above them clean. Cut contact paper to fit above the cabinet. Do not remove the back. Cut multiple sheets for each section. When one gets dirty, throw away to reveal the clean one beneath it.
As for decorating, keep in mind there will be grease and dust accumulating so I would go with things that can be easily dusted with a microfiber pole duster and go minimal.
I have old crocks in different sizes and colors over my cabinets just a few here and there so it doesn't look so cluttered
