Try visiting Joanne's fabric store, they know a lot about their sewing machines and can guide you in your selection, they demonstrate and sell them. Also they are gearing up for holiday sales. My friend bought a really good basic 1 last week.
Try your local buy and sell pages! You can get great deals there without spending much.
I would get a singer heavy duty. Add an ott light for brightness
Thanks all, I was at my Joann’s yesterday which by the way I don’t like at all but am forced to shop being the only fabric store near me. No one at the store had any knowledge of a sewing machine, none of them did any sewing. I believe there is only one person who does and so I’m going there this morning to see if she can help me. Miss all the old sales people who actually did sewing and crafting and helped out.
I have a Pfaff that I’ve used for 30 yrs but unless it gets a major overhaul I can’t use it anymore.
Hello. Some product investigation might be suggested. Although not important to buy there, reviewing Amazon reviews sometimes influence my buying decisions.
The Q&A and review future do you direct my buying with some research. Also seeking out reviews from family friends coworkers might be considered. After that sourcing your machine either from retail or secondhand venues.
Joann is always my go to
Do you know if there are any sewing machine repair shops or repair services near to where you live? If so, I would suggest to contact them to enquire if they might have any sewing machines for sale. I know that the repair service where I live sells refurbished older (made of metal, not the flimsy plastic that new ones are often made from) perfectly good machines for a very reasonable price. One of these made suffice for your needs.
Yes, I would also recommend Ott lights.
Michael’s crafts or you could try Walmart.
I really agree with Joanne's Fabric Store.
Go to Joann's. They would be happy to help you find the right machine for you!
I would go to a sewing machine store and look at the items and tell them what you need it for. You can usually try out models they sell to see if they are what you want. Also ask your friends or relatives who sew as well.
Sometimes Aldi will have nice little machines but you'd have to watch the flyers as they don't carry them all the time. Your local fabric store will have machines, Amazon has some, or you can try Craigslist. If your area has a tool library, they might have one.
A used one that is basic like the old Kenmores would be pretty inexpensive. Look at places like NEXTDOOR site in your area.
Several years ago I went to a business that sells sewing machines. I explained I wanted a simple unit that just did the basics things. The guy there understood that I am sewing machine challenged and he was nice enough to point out a model that would work best for me.
I have decided to buy one from Amazon since it’s free shipping and free returns without any hassle, this way I won’t be stuck with it. I may also see if I can get my Pfaff overhauled
Hi Nandini, I saw some at Walmart, and Amazon, hope this link helps,

I’m not thinking of buying a new one at the moment because I gave my old Pfaff a good cleaning and voila it works beautifully. If I can find a place to have it overhauled ( miss having my brother here who would have done it for me ) I think I can have it running like new. Can’t beat a metal machine especially German made.
Folks,
Please read through the entire conversation thread before commenting, as there is updated information from the poster now added to the original question.
Hello, something like the attached link would be fairly easy to use,
