Straightening dowel rod?
I need to straighten 1/2" x 72" dowel rods then taper them to 3/8" for atlatl darts. I have poplar dowel rods for now but would like to upgrade to ash later. Also what can I do to keep them straight.
Thanks Joe

Hi Joe when it comes to warping its all about the moisture content of the wood. We have a local mill here that kiln fires all of their hardwood down to less than 8% moisture content which can take up to three months depending on the type of wood. I would look for a local mill like that one and ask their recommendation for what you're looking to achieve.
Any softwood and medium hardwood will bend "warp" to the growth pattern of the tree. Some woodworkers will wet them, wrap them tightly in plastic wrap, and let them dry. Dry heat from blow dryer or heat gun will soften the wood enough it can be bent by hand or rolled on a flat surface. These may not be a permanent solution. You can taper them by sanding one end to fit a drill chuck and sand the taper by hand like in a lathe. If you clamp the drill to a work table it would work as a lathe. Only thing I can thing of.
Hi Joe, here is another link that might help when it comes to tapering:

For anyone not familiar with what atlatl darts are, here is a picture.
They are the long (3-5 ft) darts that are thrown like a spear.
(Think Middle Ages and castles!)
You would need to buy new it’s hard to straighten there warped. Then when you get new ones eather paint them or varnish so they don’t bend again
