I used instant coffee to give the boards on my industrial shelves look aged. I painted them with a gray stain first, and then aged them with the coffee, but you could skip the gray stain and just use the coffee, you can control how many coats to put on to get the darkness you want. I made the instant coffee on the stove in a pan and just let it cool and brought it downstairs with me and used it right out of the pan. I just brushed it on with a regular paint brush, you could probably also use an old rag to wipe it on as well:
