You can use the underlayment for floors cut into 7 or 8 inch widths, an easy way would be to use cheap paneling and lay it sideways and then paint. These 2 options do not take up your valuable square footage.
I have seen that mobile home particle wood, try that? Its inexpensive, and light weight. Paneling , I dont know the correct name
On a flip show the other day they cut 1/4" plywood in 6" strips and nailed it to wall and painted white. Looked good on tv anyway.
Pallet boards, they're free usually. Glue on with liquid nails or nail gun. Paint, stain, or leave natural.
I've used discarded flooring. Once it's primed and painted, no one will know.
