Bagged and Basketed!

Needed something to store and carry around sewing supplies; so made a convenient carry-all out of plastic grocery bags. My two bit to save the environment!
I recently joined a charity sewing project but soon got tired of scrambling for odd bits and pieces of lace and button stored in different places. A basket to store and carry seemed a viable solution. Also my husband has been threatening for weeks to dump the plastic bags I had saved - thus the idea of making a basket with plastic grocery bags; kind of killing 2 birds in one shot!
Multiple plastic ribbons to make the stran
I cut up the bags to ribbons and braided them into thick cords then hot glued the braids into a basket. The next step was tiresome -stitching the cords to make the basket sturdy and attaching the handles from which I emerged with bruised fingers but otherwise unscathed!
Stitched the braids with strong thread.
I used 92 bags. The braids were so long I ended up making 2 baskets - one for my sewing buddy too. Also lined the basket with fabric so that the pins and hooks would not play hide and seek in the niches and crevices. Now my sewing bits are tidily in place and what is more I can easily carry them about.

Just a quick question on the rug for the gazebo, could you not hose it off in the yard and the soap it and rinse again? Bags are almost indestructible, right?

How do you attach one plastic ribbon to the next? Are they tied together, twisted, just laid on top of each other?

I know how to slice the bags and how to braid them. I'm sure it is so easy to wrap them in circles on top of each other and glue in between. But HOW do you SEW THEM. TOGETHER ? I will need a tutorial on that, please.

I've seen rugs like this, but never a tote type bag. I love this idea. I usually try and use reusablebags as much as possible, or recycle the grocery store bags, but think I'm gonna hold on to some to try this. But I'm gonna make myself a bag to keep my papers and things in for work. Cool! Thank you!

Not a question but an idea we used to make them back when we had old campers and we would use them for rugs because the kids would come in wet and that helped to stop the cracking the water all over
