For an easy start to make a play kitchen, find an old entertainment center someone could not sell or sold for very cheap. Use this for the base of the kitchen area. You won't believe how beautiful a kitchen can be made from this old curb find! For the basic one, it is easy. For the skilled builder that wants to add more details it is still easy; but the average person who never builds may find this a little bit challenging. For them I would label it medium difficulty.

First sand and wipe it down. Choose a favorite kitchen color, preferably the color the child loves, and paint it.

After it dries a few hours cut a hole for the sink and plan the layout for the stove, sink, and refrigerator.

There is no limit to what you can do for the side and back walls for a "window" or cup hooks for inexpensive cooking utensils to hang. Even inexpensive pots and pans could be added. Your limit is only your imagination.

With a metal dish pan that fit over the hole, a sink was born. Also notice kitchen floor tiles were added to dress up the counter top.

Black "burners" were added. These can be made from painted wooden circles, or anything that would resemble a stove top. Notice too, a matching back splash was added in this step. Use the materials you have on hand. It is good to stimulate the imagination of children. If this is not a surprise gift, they could even help you in the decisions of color, textures, and accessories.

Covers with handles were added to the "oven" and "sink" area. If a small bathroom sink were used there could be a hose attached under and behind for water. It all depends on how much you want to invest in monitoring their play and clean up. The stove handles turned but of course were not actually hooked up to utilities.

Here is the final kitchen with a refrigerator made from a box, added shelves and handles. All the doors open in the fridge, stove and sink with hinges added. The refrigerator was done before photos were taken. What a delightful play area for a child and friends!

I'm in the process of doing this for my 3 year old great granddaughter. I built an awesome play house for her daddy and uncle when they were small and they loved it. It was 2 rooms made out of HUGE shipping crates from my husband's work. I made them a kitchen and a dining room. I made a table and benches for them and added windows using plexiglass for the windows. I added a heat lamp so they could play out when it was cool out. I wish I had taken pics of it but didnt think about it then. I made them canned food by washing out soup cans? Tuna cans etc. I left the labels on and put them in the open faced cabinet above the stove. I also found fake fruit to put in the fridge!! They loved that thing but unfortunately as they got older they couldn't go in without ducking so they gave it up. But LOVED it until it became too small!!
