My husband's grandmother is celebrating her birthday next week and we were brainstorming all week about her gift. She’s a great lady and we both love her dearly, but what can you bring to someone who doesn’t like getting presents?

Well, call me girly, but I just love flowers!

I thought that a potted plant would make a great gift. It will fit right in her senior protected living home and will add a nice colorful and warm touch to the cold winter we are having.

I picked up a plain black pot at the dollar shop.

I like the contrast that black background gives to a narrow palette of colors.

I purchased quilling material On Amazon: A Ruler Template Circle Size, a quilling tool and a quilling paper.

I chose to use the an orange-red palette.

Quilling is an art form that uses rolled strips of paper to shape and create a unique decorative design.

I totally recommend it, especially if you like crafting and creating simple objects. You can basically do quilling anywhere. My favorite is roll and shape while watching Netflix or talking on the phone.

I've created circles of 9mm up to 13mm diameter with the quilling tool.

To fill the gaps in between, I also made a few smaller ones of 3mm diameter.

I prepared about 300 circles in a variety of colors: red, orange, different shades of yellow, and a small amount of pink, to pop it up.

I've created a rhombus shape on the pot and filled it up with the quilling circles. One by one, I used a UHU adhesive to glue the paper to the vase.

As a stroke line I used leftovers copped wood I had from my last project.

I used the same glue for the wood.

To give it a smooth glossy finish I applied a thick layer of transparent nail polish on the wood and the paper. It will also preserve the paper from getting crumbled under pressure or water.

I set it in the sun to dry while I went to get the plant.

the finish product

I picked Kalanchoe which has a long lasting bloom.

I liked the contrast it sets between the green leafs and the colorful pot on the black background.
