I know you've seen several ways to decoupage napkins on plates and create display stands, but using napkins on the inside bowl of the goblet and plate stand definitely gives it a unique looking decorative touch - especially using dollar store items!
Let's begin by cleaning the plate and goblet with soap and water, drying them off and then wiping down with alcohol to remove any lingering skin oils or debris. Next, separate the plain white layers of the paper napkin from the printed portion that we will be using.
Then apply an even coat of Mod Podge over the back of the plate and center the napkin over it to find the best design or layout and lay it down on top of the glue. Use plastic wrap to smooth out any wrinkles. Be sure to press firmly down around the rim of the plate to get a good seal.
Gently remove the plastic wrap - being careful not to lift up the napkin. If you still see any major wrinkles, dip a finger in the mod podge and gently try to smooth the wrinkles out. There will be a few wrinkles regardless because of the curvature of the plate. Don't worry, the wrinkles add more character and charm to the design!
Allow the decoupage to dry completely for several hours or overnight. Once dry, trim excess paper off, first using scissors and then with sandpaper, filing down and away from the plate rim. Seal plate with additional coats of mod podge.
For the goblet, cut designs from the napkin to glue onto the inside bowl with mod podge and also on the bottom glass base of the goblet. Let dry, trim with scissors and sandpaper and seal with more mod podge. Let dry completely.
This technique of not adding paint to the back - just mod podge - gives a somewhat transparent look to the plate and goblet, which I really like!
To connect the plate and goblet, apply Loctite Super Glue Gel to the rim of the goblet and center the plate on top. Place a heavy object on top of plate to weigh down the two until the glue dries.
This design idea makes a lovely statement for spring and summer dining entertainment or décor!
So dainty, bright and cheery!
