DIY Barbie Sofa

There are a lot more sophisticated tutorials for constructing a Barbie sofa, but sometimes a project doesn’t have to be complicated to be lovely. In fact, this upholstered loveseat made with cardboard and a glue gun is just about the cutest one I’ve ever seen. And it will be finding a home if Barbie’s Mediterranean villa I plan to build this spring.

Using an X-Acto knife, cut 4 pieces of cardboard in the sizes shown below.

With a hot glue gun, first attach the two side pieces to the back, then attach the bottom seat, as shown in the following photos.

After assembling the cardboard structure, cover with a layer of thin fabric batting. Use a hot glue gun to keep in place. Start by covering the center, then cover the sides.

Next cover the structure with remnants of fabric, careful to prevent any raw edges from showing. Cover the center section first, then the sides. Lastly, glue a hemmed “skirt” to the seat. Cushions will cover the raw edges where the skirt is glued to the seat.

Finally, add 3 pillows (sewn and tuffed with cotton balls). I especially love the little arm covers I added! The detailing helps bring this Barbie sofa to life.

This reminds me of my mom making one from a brick for my little sister, then later using it to prop open doors in the house. Yours looks real easy to make.
