Concrete Pots

I saw these concrete planters while I was browsing hobby lobby. Yes they are concrete but they look like baskets. They were less than $12 at 50% off so I snagged two. They had handles on them which was perfect for turning them into hanging baskets because they already had holes drilled into them that we could use.

I love plants so doing any kind of project with them is my jam! I was so excited to be able to suspend a few of them and get them out of my cats reach. You’ll see the cats make an entrance a few times during this project. They can never stay out of the way for long!

Step One – Cut Strap Off

I started by cutting the strap off my baskets. I wasn’t going to be using it, I just needed the holes in the sides.

Step Two – Rope

I picked up a pack of craft rope also that was half off and $2.50 for 45 feet. I started by looping it through one hole and going around the outer edge of the pot.

Bring it back through the hole on the other side and set the end to the side.

Doing the same thing on the other side, loop another string or rope through the hole and around the outer edge of the pot. This will help support the plant and pot when we hang it.

Step Three – The Knot

Bringing all four ends of rope together, tie a knot. This won’t be the knot we hang our planter from. Depending on how tall your ceiling is, leave enough rope that your pot can hang down at a reasonable height. Our ceilings in our dining room are very tall so I needed to leave a generous amount. I ended up using quite a bit of rope for this project.

Step Four – Planting

Once you have your rope on your pot, go ahead and pick your plant and pot it in it. Wait to water it until you get it hung up so it’s not super heavy at first.

I chose to do a pothos and a philodendron because these were going in a corner that doesn’t get a lot of direct light. These plants can handle indirect light. We still have two skylights in the corner I chose so they should do just fine but we’ll keep any eye on them and see how they do.

Step Five – Hanging Your Pots

Using your large cup hooks, determine where you want to hang your new planters. Either screw them into a stud or use drywall anchors. These are heavy planters and when wet will weigh a lot.

Holding your plant up, tie a knot where you want your plant to hang and loop it around your cup hook.

They worked perfect for this corner in our dining room and added that cozy touch it needed. I never have plants in this corner because I don’t have an area to put them. Hanging them was the solution and these hanging pots turned out so cute.

I also have a large fiddle leaf fig over here and a peace Lily that I’ve nursed back to health after sun burning it. Whoops.

I hope you enjoy this DIY and comment below if you try this hanging plant hack too!

Sure they look great but all you did was replace one strap for a rope. Why not try to make the whole thing? You have the talent I've seen other things you've created.
