Love the chicken wire, but other fine mesh screening maybe equally interesting in brass, copper or galvanized.

For flower stems that simply won't stay put, try inserting a little chunk of chicken wire cut to fit inside the vase opening. Mind your fingers, though, as the cut edge will be sharp.
