DIY Cover to Disguise an Ugly Electrical Box
You gotta love when the builder of your home installs the ugly breaker box right in the middle of the wall! We were giving our builder-grade laundry room a farmhouse makeover and this ugly box needed a disguise so it didn't stick out like a sore thumb in our pretty room!
Hi, I'm Cindy. I blog at DIY Beautify where I love to share easy DIYs, crafts, tutorials and home decor tips and ideas just like this one! My goal is a beautiful home on a budget and I can help you achieve that too!
What to do with a big ugly breaker box? Why, craft up a little disguise! Keep reading and I'll show you how!
Measure your electrical box and then cut a piece of drop cloth (that you've washed and dried) to size. I doubled mine for extra weight. Make sure to add an inch on each side for a hem if needed (or just use the drop cloth's hem like I did). Sew or glue edges of drop cloth together.
Cut out a stencil or purchase a pre-made stencil that fits your room's decor. There's a great selection of large, affordable stencils here.
Using craft paint and a stencil brush, add paint to stencils in an up and down pouncing motion. Be careful not to add too much paint, it has a tendency to seep under the stencil and you'll lose your crisp lines. Pounce a little paint off onto a paper towel first before taking it to your stencil!
While the paint is still wet, carefully remove the stencils and let project dry.
Here is my brilliant solution to allow this decorative electrical box cover to be easily removed when you need to access it. Button magnets! Glue a button magnet in each corner of the back of the cover, and a couple more along the long sides.
And just that easily, I have a decorative piece of drop cloth art that is a perfect disguise for that ugly electrical box! It's easy to remove when we need to access it, but goes back up in just seconds! I hope you found this tutorial helpful!
