Let’s be honest here, our one flaw as sewing enthusiasts is that sometimes, we can make a bit of a mess of our workspace. Not a dirty mess, but more like leaving stuff all over the floor or the desk.

A cool trick to avoid that is to use containers for storing all those tools and materials. An even cooler trick is to make those containers yourself!

These fabric baskets are great for storing your measuring tapes, needles, pins, threads, and even smaller fabric pieces. They look wonderful and you can make them in about ten minutes or so. Keep reading to learn how.

Cut the fabric

Download the free fabric basket template with the sizes and choose which basket size you’ll go with.

Cut out the fabrics according to the measurements on the template. You’ll need two pieces from each fabric and four pieces from the interfacing.

Cut out the corners

Join the interfacing to each fabric piece’s wrong side with an iron.

Cut out the corners of all pieces as instructed in the template.

Sew the basket

Set one lining piece over one main fabric piece with their right sides facing inward. Align their edges and secure them together with clips.

Stitch the long edge without the cut corners with a half-inch seam allowance. Repeat with the second pair of fabric pieces.

Open up the fabrics and press the seam allowances

Set the fabric pieces onto each other with their right sides facing in. Secure the layers with clips of pins.

Finish the basket

Sew all around the fabric but leave the corners unstitched. Also, leave a gap on one short edge for turning.

Box the corners by matching the seams around them and pinning them together. Stitch them.

Turn the basket inside out through the gap you left. Sew the gap shut.

Push the lining into the main fabric and voila! The basket is finished!
