This DIY picture frame project will help you make cheap, simple, and easy DIY picture frames covered with fabric.
  • Measure the dimensions of the picture or postcard you'd like to frame. Subtract half an inch from each of the dimensions and use a marker to trace down these smaller dimensions on the styrofoam.
  • Then, draw a second rectangle with dimensions 1" larger than those of the first rectangle. Use a utility knife to remove the styrofoam inside the small rectangle and outside the large rectangle.
  • On a piece of fabric, draw a rectangle half an inch smaller than the photo dimensions.
  • Then, trace 1 and a half inches long diagonal lines pointing inward from the corners of the rectangle.
  • Draw one smaller, inner rectangle, ending at the diagonal lines.
  • Then, draw a rectangle with dimensions 2" larger than the original rectangle
  • Cut along the dotted black lines.
Glue the fabric on the styrofoam frame using hot glue.
Use thumbtacks to attach the picture to the frame.
You can also make a cute decoration for your DIY picture frame. I made fabric petals and used a button to decorate the top left corner of the frame with a cute flower.
Here you can see the final picture frame. I used a small nail to attach the picture frame to the wall. Keep in mind that the weight of the decoration will affect where on the styrofoam the nail hole would be. In my case, for example, instead of being in the middle of the frame, the nail is actually closer to the decoration to account for its weight.
You can use fabric that matches your home decor and save money on expensive picture frames. I have experimented with a couple of other ways to make DIY picture frames - such as using foam board or painting plain cardboard frames.
