DIY Tobacco Basket

Windgate Lane
by Windgate Lane
I have wanted an antique Tobacco Basket for a very long time but the few I have come across have been suuuppppeeer expensive! So I finally decided to try making my own replica. I'm pretty pleased with the outcome- and love that it is a large size to fill up my vaulted stairway.
I started with some balsa wood from Hobby Lobby that is very thin and pliable and wove two sizes of it together to get my base.
I then glued certain spots to give it some extra stability.
I then glued thicker pieces to form the border- and because it is such a soft wood I was able to just cut off any access with scissors!
I used several different stains to give it an aged and worn look, but you could stain or paint it any color of your liking.
It is perfect on this large wall! I didn't want it to be to cluttered but wanted something that would fill up the space. Check out more pictures and details on www.windgatelane.com!
