My niece asked me to make some bird stands to use as part of the decorations for her son’s first birthday party. Their party theme is Trader Miles’ Enchanted Tiki Room.

Aside from the bird stands, I also made some large signs for the party.

But this post is all about the bird stands.

Materials:

1)     5/8-inch Basket Flat Reed

2)     6-inch dowel

3)     Tropical Birds

4)  Zip ties

5)     Jute Twine

6)     Hole punchers

7)     Scissors and glue

The basket reed was cut into 16-inch lengths.

I rounded out the ends with scissors and sanded them a bit with my finger sander.

Then on each end, I punched holes that fitted the diameter of the dowel.

In the middle of the reed, I punched a smaller hole for the insertion of the jute twine loop hanger.

The ends of the basket reeds were splitting and so, in desperate measures, I just glued paper hole reinforcers on each side of the larger holes.

I assembled the pieces, secured it with zip ties and trimmed off the excess.

To prevent the dowels from rotating, I hot glued the zip tie to the reinforced reeds.

I google searched some tropical birds and did either a Cricut Basic Cut or Print and Cut on cardstock.

And then glued the double-sided birds onto the stands.

But for the party, we used these colorful dollar tree birds instead. They came out so cute, perfect for the Tiki theme.
