I was so happy when I found these 80’s style hat boxes at the thrift store a few years ago. I’ve used them around the house since then for storage, but finally decided to change them up a bit. This DIY Hat Box Makeover was super simple and you can find these around fairly inexpensive. These boxes turned out great and I love how I can use them for storage and decorations at the same time.

These were the boxes I found at the Good Will several years ago. I loved them at first, but was ready for a much needed change. Remove the string handle from the box before painting.

The insides of the boxes were in perfect condition, but there were a few spots on the outside that were torn. I peeled off any paper that was loose and then painted the box with white chalk paint. These boxes used two coats of paint and you can see the difference between one and two coats in the bottom photo.

I had three boxes and decided to paint each one in a different way.

When the white paint was completely dry, I used black chalk paint to decorate the boxes.

Replace the string handle.

Make some pom poms and tassels and tie to the sides of the boxes.
