Farmhouse Candle Holder Flip

I bought two chunky gold candle holder last year because I was trying to jump on the "add touches of gold to my house" train. I had no real plans or favorite spots for these holders because they are a bit wide and short. Stumpy if you will. On a down weekend (meaning no looming project sitting over my head), I was cleaning the house and decided our fireplace mantle needed a facelift and these would fit perfectly there.

I really love the look of the rustic wooden candlesticks but I do not love the price. Plus, I already had these. I figured paint solves a lot of problems, maybe it could be the solution I was looking for. I picked two colors that were as close as possible to the actual wooden candlesticks. I used Martha Stewart Vintage Decor paint in Linen and Clay.
First, I painted on two coats of the Clay. I let the layers dry completely in between, as directed.
Then, I added two layers of the Linen. Once I let them dry overnight, I was anxious to start sanding as much of the linen off as I could to achieve the rustic, worn look. The problem I was having with my 220 grit sandpaper is that it was not doing a good enough job. I would move down a grit level, but the results were the same. As I moved down, I noticed the paint just came off and didn't come off layer by layer.

Plan B: I dry brushed the Clay over the Linen
I have to say, they came out just as I expected. I will note that I wasn't as particular with the bottom layer's smoothness because I was going to be sanding and I think that was a major win when I dry brushed. It adds so much dimension!

I have linked up my blog post to show you how the full fireplace mantle turned out!
