We used an old large plastic cookie tray and transformed it into a useful serving tray with just a few easy steps.

This cookie tray had served it's purpose for several years filled with holiday cookies at the office Christmas party. Somehow it got stained and wouldn't be used for cookies any longer, otherwise it was in great shape and was a nice heavy plastic.

I spray painted the tray with white spray paint just in case the tray would show through the rope I was going to add.

When it was fully dry, I used hot melt glue to attach sisal rope to the sides - inside and out, leaving the rim and the base of the tray uncovered.

To get the faux galvanized look, I painted the rim and the base of the tray with silver leaf paint. The silver color is a lovely compliment to the rope. The silver leaf paint was found at Hobby Lobby and it's call Liquid Leaf. I recommend painting the rim and the base before attaching the rope. I painted after the rope only because I was undecided as to how I was going to finish the tray when I started.

We cut two handles from an old belt, drilled holes in the side of the tray and attached the handles with bolts we found in the leather working section of our local craft store.
