Come see my flower pot makeover as I refresh my little front porch for Summer! Turn plain terra cotta pots into beautiful topiary planters!

Hi friends! I hope your week is off to a great start! Last week was my birthday so I took a little time off to enjoy my sweet little family! My husband took the kids to pick out cards and flowers and took a little video for me. It was SO cute! Here are the flowers they picked out.

Aren’t the colors so vibrant and pretty?! I just love tulips! Last week on the blog I shared a little update on the home! You can see all about our building progress over on the blog. We have a meeting this week and after that, sheetrock will go up!

So today I want to share my little porch refresh that I did for Summer. I basically skipped right over Spring. HA! My little porch barely gets any sun, and I always have a hard time finding any plants that will do well in my pots during the Spring. So I wanted until I could grab some ferns and caladiums before I spruced it back up!

Flower Pot Makeover

I’ve wanted some tall round planters, but my goodness flower pots are expensive! This walkway and porch are also pretty narrow so I decided to keep what I had and give it a little makeover. I had painted the pot black last year, but decided to lighten it up this year.

To paint my pot, I purchased 3 colors in cream, white, and grey. I covered the pot completely with the textured soapstone first and then went back in and dry brushed on the cream and white. I simply sprayed a puddle of paint onto my cardboard and then used a brush to dry brush it onto the pot. This takes a little time and the key is to just keep layering! I also used a dry paper towel to dab on some paint to help it not look so splotchy. I do like how it turned out and think it brightens up this little spot. Do you?

You might remember the large DIY bird nest I made earlier this season for a Spring tablescape. Well I decided to repurpose it and use it as wall art for the porch! This little project was so simple. I took a wood panel, painted it with blue buffalo check, and then used a command hook to hang my nest. So simple, and a nice way to add a little color and dimension to the brown brick wall!

This little bunny usually sits here on the porch to greet us when we come home! I love this little guy and usually change out his bow with the seasons. Should I give him a blue bow to tie into the blue on the wall? I might have to do that in a few days!

Topiary Flower Pot makeover

The topiary on the front porch came from Walmart this year. I loved it so much I went back to get two more to use inside. I thought two of them would be so pretty on either side of the mantle. And of course once I had the plants, I needed pots to put them in. I grabbed two terra cotta pots from Hobby Lobby and made them over using chalk paint and Iron Orchid Design paper clay moulds. I love how they turned out!

To recreated these, you need to grab a terra cot pot and spray the inside and outside with a clear sealant. I did a few coats to make sure it was good and sealed.

Once it is sealed and dry, I painted the outside with white chalk paint. Then I used an Iron Orchid Design Silicone trim mould to make my paper clay moulds. I attached them to the planter with wood glue while they were still damp.

Once the paper clay forms a slight crust (typically 10-15 minutes) I applied a coat of chalk paint. After it dried overnight, I went back the next day and used white chalk paint and dry brushed a few layers on the pot.

Didn't they turn out so pretty? It only took a few dollars to make these beautiful flower pots!

I’m planning on putting my big church painting back up on the mantle soon and I think I will put the topiaries on either side of it. I wanted to do one last little house refresh and maybe a Summer tour before we put this place on the market. And if not before, I’ll share a full home tour before we move when everything is picked up and put away for showings! 🙂
