Fun Fabric Fungi Decorations
Mushrooms and fungi seem to be very popular images in home decoration at the moment. I've seen lots of wonderful prints of them in interior shops and the images in dinner plates and mugs. There is even a pair of pyjamas with a fun vintage mushroom print on them in Anthropologie which I have my eye on.
They come in so many wonderful colours and shapes. I thought it would be fun to make some fabric fungi for decoration.
I recently got a new velvet sofa/couch, but in the process of eventually deciding on what fabric to go for, I had acquired a load of velvet upholstery fabric swatches.
These were what I used to make my fabric mushrooms. I also used an old linen tea towel for the mushroom stalks.
There is a free pattern for the mushrooms on the blog (link in bio at the end). But the first thing I did was cut the fabric swatches into circles.
You only need one velvet circle for the top of the mushrooms but as I had a lot of swatches I made a lot of mushrooms.
I threaded one long running stitch around the velvet disc and pulled it tight until it gathered in. I then stuffed this with fibre fill whilst pulling the thread tight.
I made a cardboard donut disc and placed this inside the fabric mushroom top.
I then stitched a linen fabric donut onto the underside.
From the free printable pattern, I made a matching stalk and stuffed it with fibre fill.
This was stitched to the underside of the mushroom.
I used a grey pen to draw on some faint gills on the underside of the mushroom.
The mushrooms can be left as they are or decorated to make Christmas ornaments or glued to a wood slice.
I dipped the stalks in glitter and added beads on the top to make them into Christmas ornaments.

I also have a fabric mushroom decoration that matches my sofa. I choose a velvet fabric in a colour called Paprika in the end, and I love it!
I even made some denim ones.
I warn you this is a very addictive craft and soon you will have a full field of fabric mushrooms.
This isn't the first mushroom decoration I have made, I made a gorgeous but really easy fungi display (see here) where I printed mushroom images onto fabric at home just using a normal home printer.

These are just adorable! I’m not into mushrooms but these are really cute. I have never seen a cutter like that either and now that I have I will certainly be buying one or maybe a few. I cut fabric circles for yo-yo’s and make various different things with them. This would be so much easier than cutting by hand or using punches for the smaller ones, so thank you for sharing that!!
