My boyfriend lost his brother a year ago. I was low on $ but wanted to give him and his parents a special gift to show my sympathy. This is what I did.
I found these small wood pallet plaques at Walmart in their arts & crafts section. They are 15.8" x 11.8" for $4.97. I also picked up Waverly chalk paint & wax. $5.97 for 8 oz.
I was going for a rustic, weathered look. So I grabbed some screws, nails, & hammer. Out to the concrete. Threw down the screws and nails laid the pallet face down on them and stepped on the pallet. Twisting around to get some good marks on the front. I then did a coat of chalk paint let dry for 5 minutes. Took a dollop of the wax on a clean rag and rubbed over the chalk paint. Lightly sanded the edges of the slats and centers of each slat where I wanted the quotes.
I found a pic of my boyfriend and his two brothers when they were kids and wanted to put it on the plaque. I didn't want to use the pic though. So I scanned it into my computer and printed it out on white copy paper just changing the size and color to a nice sepia tone. I also had printed the quotes on to freezer paper. To transfer to the wood. I glued down the pictures and started burning the quotes into the wood. My first time actually wood burning.
These are the finished projects. I burned the edges of the pic and pallet. Giving it some more character. I then gave it a coat of polyurethane to preserve the photo and paint.
This was the one I made for my boyfriend. The Brothers quote I found years ago and I saved it to make something for my sons when they are older. I thought it was perfectly suited for the condolence gift for my boyfriend. He and his mom truly loved the gifts.
Enjoyed the project?
