Have you ever found precious baby moccasins or handmade dolls at a boutique and just WISHED you knew someone with a kiddo so you had an excuse to but it? Sometimes I just do! At the beginning of the Summer we found out one of my best friends is expecting and needless to say I'm EAGER to help nest. Being a crafter, as I browse through baby clothes and nursery decor I'm just thinking, "I can make that...and that...and that," so when I found a few cute baby quilts online I knew this would be the perfect handmade gift for my birthday buddy ( she's due the week of my birthday! eek!)

This project can be completed with just a few yards of printed cotton fabric and batting so materials for the entire quilt totals out under $50. I hand quilted the entire blanket, but you could easily modify this step and use a machine if tedious stitching isn't your thing!
I chose contrasting prints on either side of the quilt for an eclectic look. I had limited options at my local craft store, but I've been really impressed with printed cotton on fabric.com and spoonflower.com, so be sure to check both sites for options before buying yardage!
Mitered corners give this blanket a dressier look and are super easy to sew! The border I added to the quilt is a natural linen which adds a nice contrast in texture to the rest of the blanket. Alternatively you could join the front and back quilt pieces with a colorful bias/hem tape.
After inserting the batting I placed pins throughout to keep the layers from shifting while I embroidered the entire blanket by hand (phew).
The next step was the most tedious but looks AMAZING. I just did simple rows of straight stitching to replicate the style of my favorite Kantha quilt. This took several hours and about 12 skeins of embroidery floss. Using a contrasting color adds a fun detail, but you could easily use neutral colors for a muted color palette.
Who would you make this quilt for? I love the mini version so much I'm working on a full-sized version for my bed! Click through for the link to the full tutorial!
