I spend a lot of time in my home office / “escape room” and enjoy updating it to fit my mood. However, the cords hanging down from the wall mounted tv were an eyesore. Rather than simply using a cord cover, I decided to create a functional office accessory.
Cord Eyesore
I started by installing a shelf directly under the TV to hold the cable box.
Bi-Fold Shutter
Some things I never pass up at a flea market or garage sale. Unusual or homemade shutters are one of those things. I’ve had this pair for awhile and decided it was the perfect component.
Chalk Paint
After separating the two pieces, I chalk painted the outer frame in black.
Vintage Yardsticks
For several years I collected vintage yardsticks and found 7 of them that fit perfectly in the width of the shutter opening.
Wood Glue to Work
After deciding the order of the yardsticks, I used wood glue on each piece of cross wood and positioned the yardsticks in place.
Clearance Metal Decor
Don’t you love it when something you have in stock turns out to be the PERFECT addition to a project? That was the case with this metal plaque that I bought in the Clearance Section of Michaels.
Highlights
To tie in the blue theme of my room, I used Gilder’s Paste in Slate to emphasize the scroll work on the plaque. The nice thing about incorporating the metal piece is that it allows me to use it as a magnet board.
After the yardsticks had dried, I soft waxed the outside frame & yardsticks for protection and to give them a glossy appearance.
Finished
Not only was the metal plaque a perfect addition, it was the absolute perfect size and slid right in to the top space.
Wall Hanging
Using a picture hanger on the back, it was easy to hang in the perfect spot. It’s nice to have the cords hidden, be able to display my vintage yardsticks and have a magnet board to keep notes & appointment cards handy.

After looking at it for 24 hours, I’ve decided to do the other shutter exactly the same way and place them on each side of the TV. It’s too nice to hide the yardsticks. Back to the drawing board for something to hide the TV cords but I’m thinking of a simple wood frame and placing the yardsticks in a horizontal design.

Love anything made with yardsticks. Companies used to be proud to give them away...some of them were so decorative. My TV sits on an old Singer Sewing Machine. You did a great job, so creative.
