Makeover a Simple Garden Urn with Chalk Paint

Since so many kind folks have asked where I got the Urns on my Living room mantel, I thought I would share with how I gave them a makeover with paint to create an aged, distressed look.
I started with a plain, stone planting Urn from Home Depot that looked like this (they also sell plastic Urns that I think would work just as well).

There is nothing wrong with this look, it’s a perfectly good garden pot. But I wanted to jazz it up so that I could use it inside the house.
Here’s what I did:

I used three colors of Annie Sloan Chalk Paint. Graphite, Cream and White.

First, I painted the urn with a base coat of the Graphite.
Then I added a layer of Cream and let that coat dry. I was sure to paint around the inside of the Urn as well.

(I totally forgot to take a picture of the Cream layer, but you can see it peeking out below)

Finally, I added a last layer with the White.
When everything was dry, I lightly sanded it, focusing on the edges to bring out each of the three colors and giving it a distressed look.
