A need for a new design element in my living room also helped me clean up my yard! I was searching for something new to decorate my mantle. Looking outside, I saw the perfect craft material for my latest project. Grabbing 15 twigs from my backyard, I made this simple rustic star. This star can be used as a rustic decoration, or embellished with lights, wire, or glitter to be the "star" of any room or occasion.
This project starts with 15 sticks or twigs (you can also use dowels if you want to paint your star). Choose sticks that are as straight as possible and are the same width and color.

Then decide what size you want your star to be. You can make your star to be any size you choose. You can make large stars for a door or garden decorations, or smaller stars for decorating a Christmas tree. My star is about 8 inches tall.
This star is built using three layers of sticks.

Using a jackknife or whittling knife, you will need to shave down the ends of some of your sticks. I have all the directions with photos on my blog.
Using your shaved sticks, lay out the basic shape of your star and glue your sticks in place. You can see step-by-step photos on my blog.
The second layer of sticks is then laid out and glued in place.
With the final layer of sticks, the star is complete!
I finished my star by wrapping the ends with twine, but this is optional. If you want to add more embellishment, you can paint your star, wrap your twigs with wire or coat them in glitter. I have more ideas on my blog!
