I am a lover of "something" green or a pop of color among my neutral home. Even if you have an Industrial or Farmhouse look, a cute topiary is so versatile. It also never goes out of style, which is why they can be slightly expensive.
Well not any longer, you'll be doing this project for sure!!
Use a 12x12 patch of faux garden bush
I bought this patch of faux bush at the .99 Cent Store. This isn't a great specimen, but it's all they had in stock (I suggest a much fuller one if you can find it!) You'll need to use a "filler" to help keep its shape. I used a paper ball to shape it better. Any paper should work, I just happen to save butcher paper (that I receive in my packages). It's GREAT versatile stuff! You could color it green too or used green construction paper! The brown really doesn't show thru though.Lastly, you'll need some burlap string to keep the ball tied and to "sew" it into and around the patch.
Weave burlap string on backside
I weaved the string in between the bottom side of the patch. It's so simple since it has a lattice design. For a tighter ball go in between each column or for a looser version use every other.
Key is to leave long pieces out at each of the 4 corners, or at least two. These will be pulled tight and tied to the opposite corner.
Place paper ball in the middle
Place the paper ball in the middle and begin to pull corners together around it by just pulling on opposite ends of the strings.
Tie each corner to the opposite corner. You will need to snip another piece of string and then tie all 4 corners together for a snug fit.
Use as little string as you can, trim the left over pieces so they don't dangle after you've secured a tight knot and fit.
My $1 version of a topiary ball!
Wha-la...there's my $1 topiary. It's not a perfect round shape but it'll do!
Before-it was missing that POP!
This is a wall in my kitchen that needed a little pop of color...
AFTER- Topiary Ball can accent ANY decor!
It really accents the wall and looks nice to the eye, with a small touch of greenery.
I bet you could make a HUGE one by weaving several patches together. The seams are barely seen. Please post a picture here if you do! I will be making more of these for sure, now that I know the "cheap" way!
