Small children love to play the roles of adults in their lives whether it is work, home, or hobbies. One little preschool girl wanted an indoor playhouse for Christmas. The parents put their creativity to work. It is amazing what you can do with a plain cardboard box!
The fun was granting their darling daughter's wish to have an indoor play house in their family room without taking up too much space or expense. Dad was in college and money was tight.
They used a ruler, box cutter, miniature cans of sample latex paint, and paint brushes. They found the perfect box for free. First they marked off windows and doors and even a picket fence, then they began painting.
Included in the plans were two dimensional appliances and furniture painted on the inside walls. They had a small toddler chair to fit inside and miniature child sized lawn chairs for the area rug which became the "deck" on the house.
To personalize it, they put her name on the house, sewed a cloth flower in a pot, and even hooked a flower rug for her entrance at the front door. The back door and front door were both included. As you can see, most of the house was painted her favorite color, pink.
She was as thrilled as any child with a store bought playhouse. It fit in their family room for winter fun, and she had her "dream" home. As a tender hearted little girl, she knew it had been built with love by her parents. She is a pre-teen now, but the memory of that little play house still remains one of her favorite gifts of all time.
They included details such as a fence, mailbox, and even flat door knobs. The windows were cut out but the "frames" were left for a better window appearance. Half the fun was working together to fulfill their daughter's deepest desire for a "house" inside for winter play.
