When we moved into our brand new home 18 years ago, I chose a "boob light" fixture for in front of our patio door area. It had a circular bulb and was not energy efficient. I have wanted to change it to something more efficient and my style. I finally found something I thought would look nice and a bit more modern in the space.

I talked my husband into showing me how to switch out the light fixture and thought the tutorial might be helpful for others who want to do a quick DIY lighting change.

**NOTE** IF YOU ARE NOT COMFORTABLE WORKING WITH ELECTRICAL -- CALL AN ELECTRICIAN

Materials List

  • Light of your choosing
  • Wire Nuts (normally come with your new light)
  • Wire Strippers
  • Voltage Detector
  • Screwdrivers
  • Light Bulbs
  • Ladder

First things first...

⚡️⚡️TURN OFF THE POWER TO YOUR LIGHT FIXTURE!!⚡️⚡️

And then double check the power is off using a voltage detector.

Now it's time to take down the existing light fixture. This specific fixture had 2 screws holding it in place.

Then twist off the wire nuts to detatch the light fixture from the wires mounted in the ceiling.

Set the old light fixture to the side.

*NOTE- You can donate your old working light fixtures to different organizations. Check your local area.

Attach the single cross bar to your ceiling box with screws.

Both the cross bar and screws should be provided with your new light.

Screw the hollow threaded rod into the center hole & tighten the nut so the rod can not move when attaching the decorative nut.

Lets move to the new light fixture.

We used wire strippers to remove some of the wire coating so there is more bare wire out to work with.

The new light fixture has two light bulbs and they needed to be attached together.

Twist black wire to black wire and white wire to white wire (as seen in photo).

Now it's time to move to the ceiling and wire the new fixture to the wires in the ceiling.

*NOTE- You will be placing all the corresponding wires inside a wire nut and twisting to secure.

Black wire from the ceiling to black wires on the light fixture.

White wire from the ceiling to white wires from the light fixture.

Copper wire from the ceiling to copper wire from the light fixture.

*NOTE-- This could be a green coated wire either in your ceiling or fixture (or both) BOTH bare copper wires and green wires are ground wires...attach them together.

*Sorry for the poor photo quality of the next 2 photos*--I was attempting to take photos while helping hold the fixture for my husband while he attached all the wires.

TIP- If you don't have a helper, get a tall ladder and use the top rung as a support while you wire your new fixture. Never allow a light fixture to just hang by the attached electrical wires.

With the wires all securely attached, carefully move the wires & wire nuts inside the ceiling box, if possible.

Place the threaded rod through the hole in your light fixture.

Once the threaded rod is through, screw the decorative nut onto the rod and tighten.

That's it! Your light is installed!

Add your light bulbs.

My light allows 60 watts for each bulb so I purchase the equivalent to that in LED. Follow the guidelines on your light fixture.

*I removed the sticker with the max wattage info on it (seen in 1st photo of this tutorial), but have kept a record for future reference.

What this space looked like before with the 18 year old "boob light".

And now with a more streamlined modern look.

I love the shape and light it gives off but the gold is not my favorite now that it is up in the space. But, nothing a little paint (or Rub n Buff) can't fix.

That's the beauty of DIY...If you try it & don't like it -- CHANGE IT! Be creative and make it fit your style!

I change all the light fixtures in our house. Make sure you turn the power off at the breaker box and not just the switch on the wall! Also, I recently took down a ceiling fan from my Mom's house to put a regular light. I installed the new light and it came on but would not go off at the switch...arghhh the previous owner did not tie it into the wall switch, just hot wired it to the ceiling. We were selling the house and didn't want to go to the expense of an electrician tying it in...I bought a light and drilled a hole in the side, added a pull chain (can get in the ceiling fan area and watch a youtube video). You can also just buy a pull chain light but not much style for the ones I found.
