Lavender Display Idea - DIY Air Drying Clay Cones

I love working with clay but the expense of the materials and cost of getting your pieces fired can put a lot of us off.
After seeing air drying clay at our local discount store I decided to give it a try.
After playing around for a while I came up with this super easy idea...
All as you need to make these is some air drying clay, a decorative plastic doily or disc (it must have a raised pattern) and some split pins.
First take a lump of clay and roll in to a ball shape with your hands - then with a rolling pin roll out until it is slightly larger than your disc.
Put the decorative disc face down on top of the clay and roll down into the clay.
Once your imprint is deep enough you then use a pair of scissors to carefully cut the excess clay away.
Roll on top of the disc once more to ensure an even thickness and trim again.
Then carefully peel away your plastic disc.
With the patterned side on the outside roll the disc into a cone shape.
Used a little dab of water on the underside of the overlapping edge to help it stick.
Add the split pins to further secure the edges.
If you want to use ribbon to hang the cones make two holes in the back with a sharp object.
They will be touch dry the next day but it is best to leave them a few days extra to further harden.
I used mine not only to display lavender but also at Easter suspended from curly willow branches with little eggs in them.
I am also looking forward to using them as gift containers and decorations at Christmas - think candy canes and foliage - v.cute :)
