Easy
OK, so you can all picture the scene on the beach.
No, not that one.

The one where you are collecting shells and coral fragments arranging them into a pattern on the sand.
I was so touched by the one my hubby made, that I took my old sandwich baggie and collected the scene to bring home.
Now what to do with it?

Some of the stuff we brought thru customs on our vacation: nature fragments, sand, shells, pebbles, rocks etc.
You'd think, especially being from Colorado, they'd get suspicious of what's in our baggies, but so far no one has ever stopped or questioned us.
Black foam core
I start with black foam core. It can be cut into all sort of cool shapes. For this project I'll keep it simple.
You will also need glue and water-based varnishes or poly. I like to contrast dead flat against gloss for extra dimension.
I took the black foam core and glued the sand, pebbles and grass remnants onto it.
I glued the shells and coral fragments just as he had laid out for me on the black-sand beach.
I used several coats of water-based polyurethane, contrasting dead flat with gloss, to keep it all in place.

That's it!
So simple and sweet.
as his gesture was meant to be.

We made a collage of pictures from this trip too and added other sentimental icon touches for our bedroom wall.
Just to remind us of what we value most.
Suggested materials:
  • Sand, pebbles, shells & coral   (beach in Maui)
  • Black foam core   (on hand)
  • Glue & water-based varnish or polyurethane   (on hand)
