Make Your Own Bird Nests for Home Decor

This has been a nasty winter. It is definitely time to start thinking about spring! A fun and inexpensive way I've found to incorporate spring into home decor is by creating faux birds nests! They are super cute AND super easy! Possibly my favorite kind of DIY!

SUPPLIES:

  • Spanish moss or other natural moss material (I got my bag at the Dollar Tree for $1.00!)

  • Spray Adhesive

  • Krylon Sealer

  • Disposable gloves

  • Other decor items for your nests once completed (i.e., small birds, faux eggs which can be purchased in most stores around Easter)

This is a messy project! Be sure you complete this outdoors. I made my nests in my garage with the doors open.

Good ventilation is important due to the spray adhesive and Krylon sealer.

STEPS TO MAKE BIRD NESTS:

  1. Grab a handful of the Spanish moss and start forming it into the shape of a bird nest.
  2. Spray the spray adhesive onto the nest as you are shaping it. It REALLY helps to have someone to help you by spraying while you form the nest. The adhesive is very sticky! (Don't forget to wear gloves).

3.When you get the nests in the shape you love, apply a thin layer of the Krylon sealer. I ended up applying 2 - 3 layers (15 minute dry time between). The sealer keeps the nests from being so messy! This is important since they will be displayed in your home!

4.Allow nests to dry 15+ minutes after last coat of sealer prior to bringing in your home.

For a little more authenticity, you could add twigs from your yard!

Spring is such a welcome sight! Finding ways to add a touch of spring to our homes can definitely be accomplished on a dime.

Add some inexpensive plastic decor eggs (I found some on clearance after Easter a few years ago!) and a pretty bird and you have officially brought the outdoors in...well, kind of. ;-)

Happy Spring!
