I have been wanting to redo this lamp for awhile now. It's an old lamp (25 years old, maybe more). It has sat on various pieces of furniture in my home over the years and I really like it but it needed an update! I also wanted something different at the same time and did I mention I'm still purging craft/diy stuff so this will be a no cost redo project!!icon
I thought ... "What color should I make it? Do I keep this shade or get a new one? No, no, no new shade! So how do I make it different?". icon
So this is what I did...
This is up close and personal view of stains on the shade. The shade is as old as the lamp. I have washed it many times over the years and it always looked better after a good cleaning but now it's just stained, dingy and looks awful!icon
The lamp is in great shape! Black hammered metal, no scratches, all parts are here and nothing is loose! But I don't want it to be black anymore instead a brown metallic. Cover the socket and cord before you paint!icon
Okay now onto the shade. The fabric I'm using is a gold silk. I have had this fabric for years and never used it until now.
Must have been saving it for this project?!icon
Okay, I can hand sew but I'm not a seamstress at all! In fact I have broke 3 sewing machines in the past so I was not about to attempt any kind of sewing with this redo! I will use hot glue!
Oh man, I hope this works and I don't ruin the silk fabric!icon
I started by measuring the length of the shade then times 2 and added 1 inch. Cut the fabric then started to glue it to the frame on one side of a spoke then wrapped it around to the inside and glued the fabric to the other side of the same spoke. I did the same thing to the other end of the fabric 4 spokes over.
See how it is gathering, almost like a pleat.
Then I glued the leftover around the top of the frame. I did the inside of the frame first so the outside would cover all the hardened glue.
Here I'm covering the inside with the outside of the fabric.icon
I snipped pieces of fabric off for a smoother edge but I really don't think that will matter once I add trim to the edges.
And this is the trim I'm using it is gold, dark chocolate and blue. It has a moroccan look/ feel and I have been saving it too!icon
This is the lamp at night.
It doesn't look like a bell shape anymore! It looks so much better! Refreshed, renewed, RE-DONE!
This is a better picture and it will look great on the table I made to match!icon
I'll put them both beside the couch sometime this weekend!!
Thanks for looking at the lamp, now go over and look at the matching chairside table!icon
