I've been making no sew blankets for about 16 years. I've made over 60 blankets. I have taught my 6 sisters and several friends how to make them.
I started out using a 4x4 piece of cardboard as a template. I switched to a lottery ticket in 2004. I'm still using that same lottery ticket.
This is my go to gift for Christmas, birthdays, baby showers etc.
I use fleece because it doesn't unravel. I have made a few out of flannel for a light receiving blanket for a baby.
For a baby blanket I use (2) 1 1/3 yards of fleece. Young child blanket (2) 1 1/2-2 yards of fleece.
Adult blanket (2) 2 1/2-3 yards of fleece. One piece is a solid color and the other with a print.

Baby blanket with stuffed toy fox.
Trim the curled edges and any edge that has writing on it.
Trim curled edges.
Lay the first piece of material face down on a sheet on the floor or a large bed. Then place the second piece on top of the other face side up.
Trim off edges that have writing on it.
Trim both pieces until they are the same size. Place the template in the corner and cut around it. Make sure to cut both pieces of material.
Cut only the 4 corners completely out.
Place the template on the material and cut on both sides. Do not cut out the square. Just cut along the sides of the template.
Cut out all 4 corners first.
Cut the square into 2 equal strips.
The 4x4 square cut into 2 pieces.
Then cut each of the 2 pieces in half. Now you have 4 equal strips on top and 4 on the bottom.
Then tie the top strips to the bottom strips. You can cut all the strips out first and then tie until you are done.
Tie top strips to bottom strips.
I cut and tie the 4 corner strips(8 strips per corner) and 1 square on each of the 4 sides (4 strips per side). I do that in case you can't finish the blanket and need to move it. It makes it easier to straighten out and pick back up where you left off.
Tie the 4 corner strips and 4 side strips.
Sometimes there will not be enough material to cut a full square. I cut the last 2 square strips not as wide. That way you don't end up with 1 or 2 really skinny strips.

Here is my finished blanket.
