Old Globe Makeover

I've been seeing beautiful painted globes for the past couple years on social media and have always wanted to make one of my own!

This was such a fun project, although I did have some issues! Keep reading to find out how I made it work in the end.

I started with an old damaged globe that was gifted to me through my amazing local buy nothing group. I took it apart and cleaned the entire thing.

This one came apart super easy!

I got started by using my go-to bright gold spray paint for the outer portion.

Next I decided to use a custom green chalk paint that I mixed.

It took a little longer to paint than I had hoped and if I do another one I will either use spray paint or rig up something to hold it up so I can paint the entire thing at once.

This is after 3 coats of paint.

Instead of painting it by hand, I decided to use some cute Alice in Wonderland transfers on it. I decided which ones I wanted to use by playing around with different ones and different placement.

I took this picture as an instructional picture. I thought that the transfers would go on easy, just like in most of my other projects, but they DIDN'T. Instead of sticking to the painted globe they actually peeled up the paint from the globe. Now, I'm not sure exactly what went wrong but I have a few guesses. I'm an impatient person and I like to get things done quickly so I'm thinking that maybe the paint didn't have enough time to cure and adhere to the globe. I also didn't sand the globe beforehand so it might have been too slick to start with.

I ended up using much lighter pressure with the transfer stick and on most of them, I had to use a razor blade to help peel certain areas off of the transfer backing to get them started. I pushed them down as best as I could and sealed the entire piece with clear polycrylic and added some gold spray paint splatter. I also came back in with a tiny brush and some copper paint to cover up some imperfections and add some little details.

In the end it turned out ok but if I ever do another one I will definitely take some extra precautions! Thanks for following along and I hope this inspires you to create something amazing!
