I'm a big fan of using Rustoleam paint. Make sure the piece it very clean before you do. If you don't want to paint and just want an easy light stain you can make one with coffee and water.

how about wax shoe polish? It comes in a variety of colors and you can wipe iy on litely and add more as needed, just be sure to start very light or it may be too dark.
