I feel not very smart asking: What is this?? It's not a door knob...

I bought 8 of them at a estate sale. Please, I feel silly asking but I honestly don't know what they are?

Depending on the glass, they can also be beautifully prismatic and quite pretty on a middle or the window shelf

I believe Arleen has nailed it, knife rests from more elegant times so you had a place to plunk it down while for instance, the next course was brought in. (from Arlene !)

Buy an ornate picture frame, some hooks to put under each side of knife rest and a thin piece of wood or thick cardboard for back of frame and use to hang cut glass salt & pepper shakers, beautiful hankies or jewelry or whatever suits your fancy or just put them in a beautiful cut glass bowl

They are knife holders. After you use your knife you put the blade on it to prevent it from soiling the beautiful white table cloths

It is a KNIFE REST ..There would be one on the table in front of the person that carved the meat ...after slicing the knife would rest there until more meat was wanted ...the person eating the meal would rest their knife on their plates when not using it .

Knife rests come in a variety of shapes and sizes. I have a small collection of them. You can find them in most antique shops.

As everyone has said, "yes" they are knife rests. They keep a host's tablecloth clean when not using the knife during the meal. Look for a nice shallow, large bowl then place them all in the bowl and display it on a coffee table (good conversation piece) or dining room table (as a lovely centerpiece) or USE them ... if you wish. They are lovely and I sure wish they were mine!

I also found a set at an estate sale. They are knife rests used mainly in the 'best' of homes.

Knife rests are great. Keeps greasy knives off your table linens or place mats.
