Up lights work well.
We used wall hung lamps but there are all types of styles of chain hung swag lamps that could put light where you need it... we used the wall lamps in both the master bedroom and in the living room... to free up space on the end tables (smaller surface area)... They plug into a regular wall outlet, and most home improvement stores sell chain kits... to extend length if needed... Ebay is a great source if you want a vintage look
Watch for table lamps to go on sale. Hobby Lobby and Kirklands always have beautiful lamps. I have ceiling lights, but very seldom use them at all. I like the ambient light of lamps. There are also wall lamps and pole lamps to consider. Don't forget about Solar Light Tubes. I have a hallway into the garage that I wish we had had one put in when we built.
Lots of lamps! My master bedroom is like that, actually the only ceiling lights in the entire house are in the kitchen. Floor lamps, table lamps, decorative task lamps. And mirrors on the wall. I would also paint the room in a light color to reflect and bounce as much light around the room as possible.
You can create a ceiling light by using a ceiling plug in light. You can staple the cord up the wall and paint it the same color as the wall to make it 'disappear' and the either swag or staple the cord along the ceiling to where you want the light. This will take an extra long cord, but you can wire a longer cord in or use an extension cord. You could also use floor lamps in the corners that point up to the ceiling. This will bounce light off the ceiling. These can even be put on timers so that they come on and go off automatically.
