Hi dlpegoda, I Googled Shaker rocker styles and came up with a picture of a similar chair. Before you paint or refurbish contact a reputable antiques dealer in your area that knows his/her stuff. If there isn't anyone there are Google online sources that can assist you with identification, value and how to restore. If online is your route take clearer pictures out in the sunlight. It is a beautiful piece whatever the make. I would restore the rush or cane seat that was most likely woven onto it if you can afford to or even learn how to DIY :) Good luck ! grew up in the midwest.... looks alot like the Amish furniture we grew up loving. I still own old pieces that look alot like that Perhaps you could go online to an Amish furniture dealer (Amana Iowa has quite a few ) and get a expert opinion....good luck and enjoy that lovely piece.. C Thompson

Shaker but clean the finish, don't refinish it. I would wash it with Murphy's first. Then I would let it dry. If the finish is dry and clumpy I would wipe it down with mineral spirits, then clean it again with Murphy's. You should see the dirt and grime come off of the frame. Let it dry, buff with soft cloth. Waxing it with beeswax or butchers wax(2 coats at least) is the next step, using lint free cheese cloth. Buff it again with a lint free cloth to a shine. This chair most likely had a shaker tape seat, rushed seat or some type of woven seat(caned maybe). Have the seat replaced that way to be authentic.

I also have one of these rockers that I have wondered about. If it is the same, the prominent feature is that the seat is less that 12" from the floor. So it may be shaker, but why was the seat so low?

I think the seat is supposed to be woven twine. It looks mighty low. It could be a beauty. I think Christine Paulina has the right plan using Murphy oil soap, etc.

I have a repro and it is black with black and white tape. You can purchase the tape and do it yourself.
