I'm not sure why you would need a backing on a knitted blanket. I crochet and would never think of doing something like that as one of the nice things about knitting is that after worked, it has "give". And if you washed it, it may not end up the same size, thus creating puckering .
you would probably have to put stitches sporadically around the blanket to prevent that. I have to agree with Sal, tho... Why take away from the beauty of the knit? I only line purses, not blankets but, to each their own. Goodluck!
the back of the blanket looks very untidy I am a novice knitter you see x
If your baby blanket is truly wool, you may want to give it to yourself and start over. I am sure it's lovely but the first time anyone throws it in the washer it will felt, and then all is ruined. The caveat to that is there are wool "shampoos" you can get and do it by hand. It's all a matter of what the new mom has time and energy for. Good luck!!
In many of the crochet groups that I am in, people do add fleece backings to their crocheted blankets. However, they recommend washing both the handmade items and the fleece first. Then hand stitching the two together. I would be afraid of the handmade item getting snagged on the mechanics of the sewing machine.
