I want to recover the fabric on these chairs.(I have 2 of them) but I am not sure which way to go with the fabric, , casual or more formal. I plan to sell them. They are vintage as they have what looks like clawed feet. Also would anyone know about how old they would be. Thanks for any help that I can get. I was thinking for the fabric a white color. What do you think
No sure how old these chairs are.
Clawed feet

Think they are french barrel chairs, probably from the 50's, they were copies of Louis XV1 chairs xx

The finish on this is awesome! Everyone is crazy about the French Country look. You could probably find a stencil to use to paint blue on drop cloth for fabric. I say drop cloth because it is a tough fabric that can be pulled tight and give years of service. It has that "unbleached domestic" and "feedsack" look to it. Be sure and post finished photos!
  • Cane back or cane barrel chair - that's what Mom called these.

These chairs are versatile so you can go informal or formal. Just don't paint the wood! Painting nice wood is getting stale.

@Marion Nesbitt i so agaree with Marion, Painting good wood damages the intrinsic worth of vintage furniture as well.

No I do not plan to paint the wood it is just to nice.. thank you for your comments

If they were mine, I'd choose a deep red, but if you want a french look, there is a material called Toile de jouy you might like, depends where you want to use them xx

Thank you for your comment. I plan to sell the chairs after I cover them with a new fabric.

The Toile would look fantastic on the chair.

If you're planning to sell them, I'd go with a more formal material. I def. wouldn't use drop cloth material--you want them to look 'high end' if you're expecting to make some money on them.

I would use a traditional medium-floral on white or neutral. Bigger florals are in. But nothing wild in pattern or color, just interesting, to keep the chair's integrity.

Thank you Elizabeth, I was thinking the same about going more formal. I keep going back and forth. I was thinking of a off white material with some texture to it.

@Debra Check w/some local fabric stores--you may find what you're looking for, maybe even on sale or some closeout specials. Browsing help decide what you don't want (process of elimination), which will help narrow down to something that catches your eye & 'feels right'.
