This would be inexpensive and would cover the opening of the fireplace in my family room.

  • A fireplace grate as you know needs to be made of metal. A steel frame to support a steel mesh that will capture any sparks that fly out. You need to be really careful when choosing the screening materials or risk no protection. This is not really a simple DIY project to do, unless your familiar with working with metal and can weld or drill and screw steel and have a way to fasten the screening which I doubt you will find at any box stores. You may be better off doing a search on a web site such as Craig's list or perhaps E Bay for one that someone is selling on the cheep.

@Woodbridge Environmental Tiptophouse.com Thank you for your advise. I was thinking I could use some type of aluminum as my fireplace is not real. I only have a gas log. It still puts out heat so the material I need to use should be something that doesn't get hot. I think I shall look for something made for the purpose and not try to DIY. Thanks again.

I am thinking you might mean a '"fireplace screen", ? You could buy a trifold foam display board from Michaels, Hobby Lobby, Walmart, cover with what ever material you like, fabric, contact paper, what ever. Be sure to measure your fireplace opening and check the size of the foam board. Good luck

    Expanded metal will do fine.

Hit the streets.. Lol.. Yard Sales, Flea Markets, and Second-hand stores, are great places to find things you need at a price you can afford. And it helps repurpose things others don't need, keeping the land-fill clutter down.. Hope this helped... R
