Does anyone have a clue what this is? I thought it was cool, but I'm interested in finding out what it was used for originally.

looks like the bottom half of a cake carrier-w/ the color i'd say mid century. google vintage cake carriers...this one has a few pieces missing- the cover dome, not sure if the cake plate was part of the set.

I agree that it is probably a cake stand or it could simply be a plate stand. Don't think it's for a hanging scale as those usually don't have a base, although it is hard to tell from this picture if it has or not!

Come to find out it is the bottom from a hanging scale. I can be lifted up by the little wooden handle and balances perfectly. Thank you so much for the input!

It looks like a poor man's butler's server. Put the plate onto of the bottom and carry around by handle.
